WebRTC: what it is, and why it’s coming…

webrtcWebRTC (Web Real Time Communications) is all about delivering simple Peer-To-Peer Communication.

One of the last major challenges on the web is to enable simple and easy voice and video communication. This has become known as Real Time Communication or RTC for short. Historically, in order to communicate with another person via a web browser like Chrome or Firefox, the web browser must agree to begin communication, know how to locate one another, bypass security and firewall protections, and transmit all voice and video communications in real-time. Therefore RTC over the internet has been complex, needing third party plugins or audio and video applications. RTC needs to be as easy as text entry into the web has become.

 

WebRTC is a very exciting, powerful, and highly disruptive cutting-edge technology. Emerging WebRTC capabilities will leverage a set of agreed protocols (called APIs, Application Programming Interfaces)  that can be used in both desktop and mobile browsers. These protocols will link existing content, data and services on the web, and is progressively becoming supported by all major modern browser vendors. WebRTC will be useful for many tasks, but simple real-time peer-to-peer audio and video and thereby multimedia communications are the primary benefits.

 

  • Now let’s say I wanted to have a video chat with my father, but Dad’s computer is not a web server. Therefore, the problem is how do I make the request and actually receive his audio and video data directly, while also sending my audio and video directly to him, but without going through an external server (like Facetime or Skype)?  WebRTC means there’s no need for Dad to download or install any special software.

 

A great example uses the BroadSoft Labs recently released functionality. Using this allows you to create a video client in under 5 minutes to be easily inserted into your website. This way a visitor to your website will only need to click a button to be connected to your office in a video call. Each button can be linked to the same or different recipient. So, if you’re a expert in a particular product, prospective buyers can be linked directly to you. Imagine the potential!
